1、Most new people were born in developing countries. These countries are found in Africa, South America and some parts of Asia. In the developed countries of Europe and North America, the population is growing very slowly. This is because women in these countries have, on average (平均), only one or two

2、 children. In the developing countries, many women have five or more children. In 1950, around one quarter of the worlds population lived in the developed countries. By 2050, these countries will be home to only around one tenth of the worlds people. In the developing countries, more than one billio

3、n people are still living below the poverty (贫困) line. These people do not have enough food to eat and they live in poor housing. Children get little time at school and people suffer from many kinds of diseases. At the beginning of the 21st century, the worlds population was around six billion. The

4、UN. has said that the worlds population will level off (平稳下降) at 12.5 billion by the year 2100. Other groups think the worlds population will continue to grow, reaching 14 billion before it becomes stable (稳定的), or even falls. 5、eportIn the year 2000, 147 world leaders agreed to work together to reduce poverty by 2015 or earlier. From this agreement came the Human Development Report.One of the most important sections of this report is the Human Development Index . This examines the achievements of 175 countries. The Index m

6、easures a countrys achievements in three ways: life expectancy (how long people usually live), education and income . The index has some surprises. Norway is at the top of the list, while the US is at number 7. The other top five countries are: Iceland (2), Sweden(3), Australia(4), the Netherlands (

7、5). The UK is in the thirteenth position, while China is in the middle of the list. The bottom ten countries are all African countries, with Sierra Leone (in West Africa) at the bottom of the list.The report describes eight Development Goals. The most important goals are to:reduce poverty and hunger
